Since the "Hands Off" rally was on a Saturday, though, I didn't see anything on the local news about it. They kind of take the weekend off. But I drove downtown, with Ember in the back seat, part of her car practice. The first few are people walking toward the rally point. All are photos from my car window while driving by, so not the best.

The rally was at our State Capitol, and I saw on NextDoor that someone estimated the crowd at 3000. It seemed like a "good crowd" to me, considering it was a pretty chilly, overcast day. It also seemed like the "aging boomer" generation was well represented. Funny how having your retirement savings lose a lot of money in a week will put a fire under the middle class.
"The kids" have their entire future at stake, but they have more time to recover from the big stock market drop than we "Boomers" do. In the past month I've been to a couple of informative sessions with my financial guys and am happy that I'm in some "hedging" things that help shield from the downside of this slide. Never entirely, of course. If the goal is to have your money last the rest of your life, every time it takes a hit like this last week, no matter how large or small your "nest egg" is, it's serious business if you are (like me) already retired, or if you're getting close to the time you'd LIKE to retire!
Ember did well in the car but clearly is not entirely over her anxiety related to it. It was both a longer trip than most of what we do, but also different look to traffic and road construction. We almost got home when she lost her breakfast. She whined at the garage door while I cleaned up the results, then had a pretty quiet rest of Saturday.
We are continuing the dietary change, and the increased performance for each treat, in the hopes of helping her drop some of the excess weight. I may be imagining things, but it seems like she runs better in her fetch games when she's a little bit on the hungry side.
Ready for my walk, in my alternate harness, Mom!Regardless of news and such, life goes on, and Life is by definition a Good Thing! Choose wisely to live well.
Spark on!
Yes, our downtown area had a rally, too. Well attended. Clara was visiting me and she and I went together.
ReplyDeleteYou mess w/retirement and we’re going to speak up. NOW it’s time for our Congress to take back their power.
Indeed, need to have the funds to take care of ourselves! That’s what I tell our kids our legacy to them is . . . we will take care of ourselves. I HOPE WE CAN CONTINUE to do that. It’s scary.
Awwwww, sorry poor Ember still gets car sick. Poor girl.
Here’s to a peaceful day!

I don't know how much it will impact the things that are being done, but I do know it helps us feel we are doing "something", lifting our voices. I, too, hope that we can continue to "take care of ourselves", financially, healthfully, including mentally, and spiritually.
DeleteA peaceful day, indeed! And tomorrow (Monday), Ember has another session with Scott.
HOPE Ember has a good training session w/Scott!

Sadly, Scott had to wave off today's session with Ember and me. So I took her on a leash walk, sort of a consolation prize... not as good as a run with Scott.
DeleteThe local news stated that the crowds at the Columbia courthouse and the capital in Jeff City were larger than expected. I haven't read how large the crowds were in KC or St. Louis.
ReplyDelete"More time to recover" is not a conversation that anyone should have to have. He warned everyone. Most refused to listen.
Glad the pup is doing great with the training.
Have a wonderful week!!
You know, I don't think him warning everyone made any difference, because most people don't think at the level of an analysis of the "side effects" of tariffs. Or for that matter, the "side effects" of downsizing jobs. People without jobs change how they spend. And this economy is built on people spending. I'm sure thinking more than once before making a purchase. A few weeks ago, I may have mentioned in a blog that I burnt out a TV... I have not replaced it, and don't intend to. I am going to learn to live without having a secondary screen in another room. Not good for me anyway, right?
DeleteOnward. Hope you have a good week too. May the thunderstorms (physical, political, and emotional) veer away from each of us!

ReplyDeleteEstimate was 2,000-3,000 protesters at our State Capitol. Many folks held smaller ones all around the city (population 1 million).
Crazy weather here as well as other places. In the 80's several days ago and now lower 40's with wind chill temps nearing freezing. Our poor plants that had begun blooming are really confused. Slow continuous rain both days of the weekend welcomed -- our trees have perked up and the lawn is a healthy shade of green. Water table is still pretty low.
Yep, scrutinizing large and small purchases as to 'need vs. want' is once more a serious necessity (we have opposite perspectives on the definitions of need and want that have never been resolved !!).
Ho-MOAN-ership intervened to set priorities for now. We have a wonky power grid in this State with frequent brownouts (brief losses of power). One that had three quick off-on events within a few seconds left us with 6 dead outlets and smell of electrical burn.
Phase 1 of 3 done Saturday fixing the potential fire hazard (microwave too powerful to share a 120V outlet with other items & likely reason those outlets were affected by the brownout -- but the switch in garage fuse box was not tripped which is another issue).
Phase 2 to install a dedicated outlet for microwave and bring both the indoor & outdoor panel boxes up-to-code will take City permitting (nightmare here to deal with City on permits and inspections).
Phase 3 will be to bring all outlets, inside & outside, up-to-code. House built in 1981 (we bought in 1984) -- the electrician pointed out that on the bright side we have all copper wiring instead of aluminum found in multiple nearby subdivisions.
This week I'm scheduled for a CT scan of bladder to make sure there are no 'hot spots' on interior wall, middle layer & exterior wall before going to next round of treatments. Onward through the fog.
The iconic Bette Davis line, "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night," is from the 1950 film All About Eve. I substitute 'bumpy night' with 'bumpy ride for undetermined length of time'.
Susan
Proud of your city, Susan, turning out. I heard that one of my brother's favorite running spots in Rochester, NY was a gathering place for the protests, as well.
DeleteBoy do I "get" the Ho-MOAN-ership issues! Sometimes one just has to be grateful to even be able to set priorities! Add the health "troubled waters" and yep, welcome to our generation!
May the bumps in your ride be gentle ones, Susan, and may some of the priorities be for small luxuries that make you smile!
