Full privacy fence... I'm enclosed now. Only gate is on the far side of the house!
Problem #1: A gap, about 8 or nine inches wide between the railing and the privacy fence. A small child could wriggle through and fall to the patio (concrete). They have promised to fix it.
Problem #2: There is supposed to be a drink rail on the long side. Foreman Brian said they didn't have the brackets to attach it. Calvin promises it will get fixed on Friday.
Calvin promised they will shift those "leftovers" to the north side of my driveway on Friday so I won't have them on the patio.
Until that patio is cleared of hazards, I can't use my sliding door to release Ember into the yard, which means I can't take down the x-pen temporary fence, either.
Consequently, I have called up the day care and slotted Ember in for Friday, Saturday, and Monday. Friday and Monday I will have workmen here, finishing up on Friday and hauling off the trash on Monday.
I only booked her Saturday, not Sunday, over the weekend, because I figure she'll need a "down day" with "mommy and me" at least one weekend day.
On the plus side? The supporting columns are much bigger/sturdier than the old ones. The flooring and steps are composite, not wood, so don't need as much maintenance.
Friday June 19 - Happy Juneteenth
I'm a bit frustrated. The workers did not come back Friday morning, so even though I took Ember to day care and removed the center of the X-pen barrier. I called the head guy to express my worry about the 8 80-pound bags of concrete mix, two of which had the bag broken open, that were sitting on my river rock bed.
Naturally, there was rain in the forecast and the crew that was supposed to move all that stuff... did not show up. I called the boss who said he would call the crew chief and get back to me. He never called back. As the drops began to fall, I tried an emergency shelter made from Ember's doggy pool.
I weighed it down with a couple of cinder blocks from the back yard. I am not hopeful that the bags will stay dry and I will not pay these dudes the remainder of their fee until they get the trash and leftovers out of my yard, and the gap fixed and the drink rail installed. If those bags get wet, they will be solid concrete and impossible for me to shift!
About 2 p.m. my son called to check up on me, and we chatted for quite some time, "solving (not) the problems of the world", and generally having a vent (guys don't call it bitch) session. That pulled me back from the anxious worrying and second guessing.
Saturday, June 20th
This was the day that our local Community Center held the celebration for Juneteenth. I had never been to such a celebration before, but I knew that my son and DIL intended to attend. Despite the forecast of rain, I thought I should go. If nothing else to get myself educated about a holiday that growing up in one of the whitest states in the nation, I had been unaware of until the pandemic years.
It was packed. I found the group and was pleased at the sheer joy of the attendees.
There was live music, emcees, lots of organizations had booths to promote their services, food was served in a buffet line (hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and water, nothing fancy, but very holiday fare).
There is a water park pad, so the kiddos were able to enjoy water even before it started coming from the sky.
I have turned into that old lady that stays and hour or an hour and a half and ducks out early. Given I had to park about half a mile away, it was a good thing. By then it was raining steadily.
Ember was in Saturday day care. They open an hour later on Saturday, so we had time for about a mile of neighborhood leash walking before we went.
When I went to pick her up, she was wet from playing outside in the rain, too. I love a summertime rain when the temperatures are mild. I had taken down the x-pen panels in case the deck guys were to come to clear off, but with the rain, I held out little hope. I put them back up in the rain before I went to get Ember.Sunday, June 21
Happy Father's Day. Rain continued. I went grocery shopping during Ember's morning nap. When I got home, I let her out of her crate and together we went on a neighborhood walk. Then Dexter (the car) took us for a ride to recycle some cardboard.
I was pleasantly surprised when about 12:30 p.m., Ember decided to crate herself for another nap. Perfect timing. I went upstairs to pay a bill, then snuck out of the house about 1:30 to go to FGC's baseball game. As usual, no photos due to foster program rules.
It was a really good game. He seemed most excited when he got to play first base (he made an out), and later in the game when he was tapped as pitcher (he caught a fly ball that would have been foul). He did well at bat, too. This year the league is "coach pitch" but if the kiddo can't get a hit after four pitches, they put up a tee for them to whack it. FGC managed to get on base off coach pitches twice, and his third (and final) at bat he had to use the tee... and whacked it so well he got a double! With the rules this year, the inning ends with either the batting team getting five runs, or the fielding team gets three outs, whichever happens first. FGC managed to get across home plate on all three turns.
I have no clue what kind of score there was at the end of the game (nobody really counts it), but I was very pleased to see how much these kids (all of them, not just FGC) have learned over the past two seasons. I'm also impressed with the volunteers who coach and umpire! We are very lucky in this town to have so many folks involved.
I ducked out right after the game and came home to my pup. It was about supper time and getting fed no doubt helped a lot to establish a good mood!
Monday, June 22nd - we are there!
I dropped Ember at day care and came home to find... workmen!
They installed my drink rail (read "cat superhighway").Fix for problem #3: Calvin showed up and took away the trash from the patio and swept up.
He took away the concrete mix bags that I had sheltered with the baby pool. He hosed it down so that the river rock was in good shape, no damage from my anxious weekend! The leftover building materials got moved to the driveway, so that Ember doesn't have to be kept on leash until the lumber truck comes to pick them up on Tuesday.
After I wrote him a check and he left, I took down the x-pen panels, moved the chairs back onto the deck, and hosed down the patio, an extra layer of cleaning because... Ember will be free to run loose in the back yard again!
All's well that ends well, and I can return to normal living for a while!
Life is good. Spark on!

That all looks great!
ReplyDeleteThanks. It feels good to have it at a stopping point. This morning I left the sliding glass door open while I headed out for "poo patrol", heard a commotion behind me, and turned around to see a streak of gray (The Prisoner) jetting out of the house, followed by a hard-charging Ember!
DeleteHmm! I thought the cat was in his safe space. Then I remembered I had let him out the front door first thing this morning. Apparently, he took the open door as a signal it was safe to come in for breakfast... and had to do a fast retreat.
Hope you have a great today and week ahead!

ReplyDeleteConstruction results look 'right nice' as folks in NC would say often in the year I lived there. Maternal grandfather born and raised there so our family went to multiple family reunions over the years (first in 1965 and last in 2000) -- always on Father's Day at a church potluck with LOTS of relatives. My grandfather was the oldest of 14, most of whom remained in NC.
Thursday we are having our gutters replaced. List of things to get done never ends. Plumbing issues next. I've always wanted glide out shelves in our lower kitchen cabinets -- arthritis that has plagued me since late 30's now dictates that we should get these. Will collect bids from at least 2 sources based on referrals from friends.
This Friday will be treatment 3 of 3 of this round of cancer stuff (non-chemo, but annoying). Hopefully October follow-up will be a declaration of remission. Disappointed once before BUT ready for this to be it! There will be follow-ups along the way.
I've had long hair most of my life and it had gotten below waist level so I grimaced recently and had 8" taken off. Still have a two-toned head of hair with about 6" from scalp silvery and the rest wavy reddish-brown with a few streaks of silver. Front sides copying Bonnie Raitt, country blues singer.
I sure miss Spark People at times. My youngest sister, 66, the baby of us 5, had a micro-stroke recently. She pretty much lives on fried, cheesy takeout and unhealthy food. As a young kid at the local cafeteria on Sundays she would always pick the same things, macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes, corn & a big sweet roll. Lots of sodas. The doctors made it very clear that this needed to change so I retrieved some SparkPeople info and memes about healthy eating to share gradually.
Tomorrow I will see her and get a report on how eating healthy for two weeks has gone. She doesn't eat pork, fish, chicken, turkey, deer, eggs, most vegetables and is limited to small serving of red meat once a weak.
Have a good week in Emberville. We have been having temps in the high 90's with heat index of around 110 - 113.
Susan
Oh, Susan! They already have "high heat" warnings out here for next Sunday, so I imagine your temperatures will be even worse, if the pattern extends down to Texas.
DeleteHope the things you were able to save from Spark People help your sister. I know I miss the platform which was such a good mix of social and advice... all in one big tent! I still mourn it at times, even while I understand the business decision.
I bet your two-toned hair is lovely. My co-mom-in-law (DIL's mom) still has her hair shoulder-length. It is gorgeous, even "at our age". OK, she's a few years younger than I am, but we're both grandma generation.
Still have you on my prayer list about the cancer stuff. Hope your list of household projects adjusts as priorities and budget allow!

Really great job and all the fixes done, which is great! I don't know why no one calls just to say that they won't be there or that they will be there on another day. I know that they risk getting yelled at by so many but most people are giving cell phone number and they could just give a quick text to say that and then no yelling. Guess that is the new norm but hard on those who did grow up with those calls from companies. Glad to hear your home is all normal again. Have a great rest of the week.
ReplyDeleteYou said it, my friend! I know the work crew did not have my phone number, but they have their boss-man's, and he has mine. They might have at least given me a heads up with whatever the issue was.
DeleteThe happiest of us all with the reestablished "normal" is Ember, of course.
Have a great remainder of the week!
You went big with your fencing, deck and railing and it really turned out nice. A great place to read a book if Ember will allow it.
ReplyDeleteMaureen from California
LOL! Ember is (hopefully) past the chewing up books phase. I have tried reading to her on the deck a few times. She may eventually get used to it and even start to like it.
DeleteSorry there are problems to be solved w/the patio but hope they are solved soon.
ReplyDeleteGlad you got to see FGC’s game.
Ah, glad the saga of the porch ended well and now Ember can be out there. It looks wonderful.
Here’s to a good week ahead.

Once we get over the "failure to communicate", the problems were all solved, thank goodness. Hope all's well with you and Jason and the adult offspring. Virtual hugs and hope the week ahead goes smoothly!
DeleteWhat a weekend rollercoaster, but man, am I glad it all turned around for you! Those deck guys really tested your patience leaving that concrete out in the rain, but your doggy pool MacGyver move was brilliant. Honestly, your son calling at just the right time to let you vent sounds like exactly what you needed to stay sane. It is awesome that you got to check out the Juneteenth celebration and learn something new, even if the rain tried to ruin the vibe, and seeing FGC absolutely crush it at his baseball game must have been the best highlight. It is hilarious that the new drink rail is already designated as the cat superhighway. Seeing everything cleared out, the gap fixed, and Ember finally free to run around the yard must feel like a massive weight off your shoulders. Enjoy getting back to normal and having your backyard paradise finally sorted out! (((BIG HUGS)))
ReplyDeleteThese things generally all turn out in the end, but they can tie you in knots while they are "not yet resolved". The lumber yard truck didn't show up to collect the leftover materials from the driveway until yesterday (Thursday the 25th).
DeleteAnd it feels so good not to have it hanging over my head!
