Dear Santa

Dear Santa:

Please send toys that take a while for Ember to destroy.  The grunting pig no longer grunts.  Many squeaky plush toys have not just lost their stuffing, but also the squeakers.  Fabric woven tug toys have been unraveled and torn up. Would you believe one of her puppy teething ring toys bit the dust under her grown-up teething attention?  But without toys, she'll decide on something else to chew on, for chew and evisceration are in her genes.

Yep, Santa's going to need to refill the toybox for my girl.

Now if she can only avoid getting a stocking full of coal, instead!  Today she swiped a glove again, but this time she did not put any holes in it, just got it all slobbery.  Then mom could not go out with her for a while.  Thursday was the coldest day this week, starting our morning at 13℉.  Friday will be better (weather wise) and the weekend promises phenomenal 60 degree highs, both days.  We shall see how accurate that it, but it simplifies the hat/glove wars when it's warmer!

I notified the family that Ember will not be coming to Christmas dinner with them.  Not a good environment for her at this stage in her development and training, and it's just tempting her into undesirable choices.  This should be a human-kid centered Christmas, anyway.

Meanwhile, Ember's hu-mom is racking up the home repair bills.  Tomorrow the handyman is coming to give me an estimate on replacing the insulation and repairing the part of the house where the plumber had to carve to fix the drainpipe.  A fella named Tim is coming to provide that estimate, then the work can be scheduled, once they have given me a starting figure and I've approved it.  It's not like this is an "optional" project!

I'm being grateful that the weather is being kind to me while my outside "under" part of the house is only shielded by a piece of plywood the plumber had on his truck.  The handyman service thought the work might be scheduled next week.  It looks like the next day with a high under 40 is Tuesday, and the coldest Wednesday with a 32 prediction for a high.  Hope they are on target with this trend, at least until we get the insulation in place.

On the plus side, I did feel well enough to go visit the trainer for a gentle workout.  Later I napped while Ember did, at least part of puppy nap #2.

Friday morning, already!

And the morning temperature is 21!  Going to publish this then head down to check on things.

Life is good.  Spark on!

  1. Maybe a gift from Charlie Brown's Halloween bag as a chew toy. 😉

It's great that you can find a local repairman. Getting repairs and deliveries here are the pits. The new clothes dryer was originally scheduled for a delivery/install for the 10th. An email yesterday morning, with no other information. stated the date has been changed to the 17th. (*&()*^

Christmas with a youngster usually produces feelings of happiness and side-splitting laughter. Enjoy the dinner with family.

    Stay warm. Stay safe.

    1. Having delivery of something as vital as a clothes dryer delayed by a week might have a body feeling a little bit Grinchy!

Hope that situation smooths out for you.

  2. I hope Santa sends Ember lots of good chew toys! And the handyman work isn't as expensive as first thought. Huge hugs.

    1. Those are great Christmas wishes, thanks! Ember and I have had a good morning so far, Friday. So hopefully she'll keep her nice list entry.

  3. How very boring life pre-Ember must seem!! A mere 10 months ago, it was you and a very sedate mature kitty…..now…..vavoom!! That Ember is alert and opportunistic, never missing an opportunity for FUN in her world, equating to destruction and work in yours. I know Santa will be very good to her this year….she is one very fortunate pup and it is self-preservation for you!!!
Sorry about all the repair bills….some times it seems things all break at the same time….ugh! Hope that you get a heat wave; I’d send you some warm air but FL has had nothing but cold fronts recently :(!

    1. LOL... yes, I do things for Ember's sake that I wasn't doing for my own! Hope y'all down there in Florida survive what is for you a cold snap! I was in Florida in February 2015, when there was a night dipping below freezing, and it was an EVENT for my cousins! Maybe I should be sending you some warm air, except... kind of can't spare it until I get those repairs done! LOL.

  4. Yep, it's interesting how some dogs get enjoyment from destroying the toys and others nibble, but their toys can last for a couple of years. In our household we have one of each type. Thor 'small bites' his cloth toys and runs to greet us when we come home with his current favorite baby. Roxey destroys them quickly, doing the tear and shake of 'killing' routine. She also will walk around with a squeaker toy in her mouth continuously squeaking it. The biggest destroyer was Diesel, a Daschoud mini bull-terrier mix ... that girl could destroy a toy in minutes, and the strongest Kong toy was all over at the end of six weeks. Thankfully, she was not one for chewing "no-no" things.

Yes, it's probably kinder for Ember to stay home this Christmas; she may have sad eyes about it, but it would be too bad if she had to be scolded or acted out afterwards from overstimulation.

Here's hoping the repairs are swift, well-done and on the very low end of the cost-range.

    1. Yes, every dog or cat is an individual with their own likes and dislikes... and those can change over their lifetimes, too. It happens SO FAST as a puppy grows up, too. In the early days, the obsessions changed on a daily or weekly basis. Now, she's pretty attached to her routine!

  5. Well, sounds like a good choice to let Ember safely @ home for Christmas to avoid problems.

Lord! You have had way too many expensive projects! May it end!

Glad you were able to get to the trainer AND take a nap, too.

    1. 100% agree about the "too many expensive projects".

But it all began because I committed to three "want to haves", then added on a couple of "nice to haves"... THEN got dumped on by several "MUST FIX" items. Let's see... the water heater and dishwasher breaking... the leak in the drain from the underground sprinklers, the drainage issue in the yard, the cracked pipe, and the damage related to fixing it are all "must do" projects that I was "gifted" by the universe. Upgrades to the landscaping, weed removal, new sod... those were something I wanted done. The tub/shower conversion was close to a "must" because of parts being unavailable to just fix, but a significant upcharge. The faucet in the kitchen was kind of the tip of the iceberg of what I just got fixed with the dishwasher and the drain pipe.

If I look back, the real problems could have been fixed without replacing the appliances, but... then I wouldn't have my nice appliances. So closing my ears and singing "la-la-la-la" and praying for a cheaper 2025 in which to enjoy what I had done in 2024!

  6. Oh, Ember! She's quite the little destroyer! It's amazing how much energy they have. I hope you find some indestructible toys soon.

I'm glad to hear you're feeling well enough to get out for a workout, even if it's a gentle one. It's always nice to take a break and recharge.

Wishing you a peaceful and warm holiday season, despite the home repair challenges.

A hunker down week has begun

It was snowing overnight Sunday, with a dusting accumulated by morning.  It continued actively but lightly falling all day.  Ember went out ...
