It was a cool but not freezing night, with a waxing moon peeking through the clouds. Felt very Halloween!
Ember started the evening as a quiet girl in her crate but as the activity began she got restless and I let her out and put her in her "walking clothes".
Not a puppy to sleep through the whole thing in her crate, Ember was a good girl in leash and harness, content to let mom know when trick or treaters arrived. She knew before I did. She knew before a doorbell would ring.
Naturally, I overbought the candy. Should have started out the evening having the kids just "grab a big handful" (as I did with the final group). I let them take 3 to start with and didn't complain if they couldn't count and got five or six.
Now, of course, I have plenty of leftovers!
One family as it was starting to get dark. Total trick or treaters: 9. This matches last year's count.
Across town, "the kids" had about a hundred, maybe a little more, but they are in a section of town with younger families. Ours is starting to skew a little younger now.
I could not resist... son's costume: Clark Kent changing into Superman.
Hope everyone had a good Halloween!

I love the costume! Last year we had a lot of kids, maybe about 100. So...I bought "minis"; a bag of sourish candies and one of chocolates at the big box store. The rattles I heard at the door when DH was giving out candy made me suspicious, so I checked. Instead of giving them a few from each bowl, he was foisting the sour candy to save the chocolate for himself to pick through later!
ReplyDeleteWe had many less kids than last year; I'll blame it on the extreme winds. He got his wish and now has about one half of the original bag to sift through. There's only a quarter of the sour candies left and they are my downfall, but at least they annoy my tongue so much I limit my intake.
I may chop up a bunch of those minis and make "candy surprise" cookies for Christmas
You know I thought about that too. Making cookies with the leftover candy that is. Since I don't have a workplace to take the leftovers to anymore. I think last year I twisted them on a doctor's office or something.
DeleteLOVE the DS's costume . . . Clark Kent turning into Superman! AWESOME.
ReplyDeleteglad Ember was a good girl!

She made up for the "good girl" last night this morning by swiping a pumpkin from a neighbor's yard on an aborted morning walk. She seemed very proud of herself trotting home with the smallish (pie-sized) pumpkin held by its stem! Sigh.
DeleteA squirrel had already started to gnaw on that pumpkin before Ember got hold of it, so I didn't feel TOO bad, but I did go to the grocery store and purchase one of a similar size that I left for the homeowners' whose yard she picked it up from. Along with a note of apology!
Love the costume! We no longer have any that come to the apartment building here but when we were in Ottawa since we lived in the neighbourhood where my school was, all the kids wanted to come to our house. We usually had over 120. I kept it simple and bought those boxes of chips, easy to keep count and not too much of a problem if there were any leftovers (there never was - LOL)
ReplyDeleteThanks. I thought it was clever. I was never that inventive when I was a kid, much less as a young adult.
