Thanksgiving Season Day 6

 Saturday, October 18, 2025

I don't care if you are a Republican, a Democrat, an independent or even a non-voter... this country was founded on the principle of having No Kings!

You cannot characterize people who peacefully protest policies as all being terrorists or hating your country.  Many may be conservatives, old-fashioned small government conservatives, who believe in the institutions of government, separation of powers, and the sanctity of the voting booth.  Many of us would not be getting "in your face" except for the slurs that have been directed!

Today I am thankful that it takes more than one person's will to remove my right to political speech in favor of democracy!  And if someone has to come bail me out, well, as the line from the movie/play Mame said, "I lived!"

Addendum:

It was a peaceful and joyous adventure, my first attendance as a rally participant.

With my daughter in law on the Capitol lawn.  The crowd looks sparse in this photo but it was packed from where we were standing about 10 feet to the street.  I had to park about 8 blocks away.

Whatever your news may be telling you, even in "deep red" states, Americans take offense at being called terrorists just because we happen to disagree with the current administration!  Nobody was behaving like a terrorist today.

Add to this that I commend the local police force.  No huge presence (I don't think I saw even one uniformed officer, though there were several veterans among the protestors).  Crowd control is understood in Husker Nation.  And it can be done in a de-escalating and respectful manner.

You girls rock! Make that 'You women rock' !! I observed many protests in the 1960's since my office building was facing the quad in front of the tower (i.e., Vietnam, Women's Lib & Black Power stand out most in my mind). This area was promoted as a free speech area on any topic of one's choice, every day. A favorite tee-shirt of mine is "I survived the 60's twice."

    1. The Capitol steps is the natural gathering place, and I used to work about a block from there, so it is familiar territory. I have seen many voices raised in this spot for multiple causes, some of which I might agree with, some of which I would not... but it's there... and we can make our positions known, even if all some folks care about is "crowd size".

  3. That sounds like a really powerful and meaningful experience! It's great that you felt able to exercise your right to political speech and that your protest was peaceful and joyous.

It's completely understandable to be frustrated by being mischaracterized just for disagreeing with policies. It's a fundamental part of democracy to have those debates.

It's wonderful you got to share that moment with your daughter-in-law and saw the local police handle the situation so respectfully. Thanks for sharing your story!(((BIG HUGS)))

    1. Grateful that it was mostly peaceful. Unfortunately, our small city broke the "no protest related arrests" in that there was one lady who brandished a taser at four young men who confronted her. She got arrested for "menacing" them, even though she didn't actually taze anybody. I only found out about by news reports after the fact, it happened later in the day after I was home already. I would not call that a big enough altercation to summon the word "insurrection", though.

      ((( Big Hugs ))) back!
