This is Veterans' Day, the classic day to show our appreciation for and gratitude to those who have worn the uniform of the armed services of the USA and served in our defense.
My older sister posted photos of our paternal grandfather in his WWI uniform on the 10th, in honor of his birthday. I found it interesting that he was in Europe as a Prisoner of War and Armistice Day came the day after his birthday. Funny how family stories make history come alive for a kid.
The photo is unrelated, just the chili mac I put together on Monday. Monday was the coldest day of the week, and it put me in a mood to bake a hot casserole.
I post the picture of my grandfather in his WW1 uniform too, he also was a prisoner of war and he escaped.
ReplyDeleteI will bet that made for a really great family story! Our family story related to world war I, is it Grandpa and his brother were both in the same unit in the same battle at chateau Tierney in France. I know I have that spelled wrong. His brother was killed in action. He had to write his mother about losing his brother. Then when he was taking prisoner he lost his dog tags and he was afraid that they would report him dead and his mother would think she'd lost both sons. So the family with whom he was billeted as a prisoner helped him smuggle out news to his mother so that she would know he was still alive. He came home to read the telegram that informed her of his death, but his letter had reached her sooner. That makes for a very happy family story.
DeleteYou can certainly tell I did that via talk to text. A "that" got translated to it. "Taken prisoner" got converted to taking.
