Thanksgiving Season Day 25 gratitude

 Thursday, November 6, 2025

Today I am thankful for my little car, with over 52,000 miles and 13 years old based on model year.  Dexter has served me well during those 13 years, and I anticipate he will for some time to come.

When I purchased this little car, I said it was my "last car".  I wonder whether in fact it will end up being just that, 'cause he seems to have life left in him, and I'm a little leery of the fancy new "computer surrounded by vehicle" jobs they sell these days.

I am also thankful that I still am able to keep driving, as it's a big part of living independently as we get old-er.

Kind of a corollary to my earlier gratitude for the medical profession, I'm thankful for the cataract surgery and the glaucoma meds that make this independence possible.

  1. I chuckle at your mileage! I remember my cars, poor things. I went through 3 when I commuted 100+ miles a day. Yeah, now they are computers on wheels. Just the other day DH said he had to update the map in his SUV!

    1. I didn't even have that long a commute when I worked... 7 miles each way. And I stopped working at the end of 2017. Yep, updating the maps in your embedded GPS has become "a thing".

  2. We feel the same way about Sparky. He probably is our last one too and that's okay with us. Have a wonderful day!

    1. Sparky is an electric? Or a hybrid? Just guessing from the name...

      Have a great day!

    2. Neither really, just a Chev Spark 2013 but it is really great on gas, usually needs only a once a month filling trips to Brantford or not. ;)

    3. Ahhh... I love that Dexter is a sipper not a guzzler, too.

  3. My 2014 has 201,500 on it as of this morning. Perhaps I can put in a bid for Dexter if you ever decide to get rid of him. As I am sure you are aware - JK LOL. Having a car like that is a treasure! I thought my Suburban would have died or been replaced at this point...but now I think I will drive it until it dies a dignified death hopefully in my driveway and not on the side of the road.

    1. As long as we keep taking care of them, our "little cars" should outlast us. Dexter goes in to have his rear shocks replaced next week, since I had to reschedule to use him as Grandma's taxi service today!

  4. Awwwwww, Dexter is a faithful car!

Oh for sure, having just gotten back to driving again after my hip misadventure, I definitely agree . . . driving is a huge key to independence, and glad to be getting it back.

Whatever it takes to remain independent is worth the effort!

    1. Rejoicing that you are back to driving. And just in time for that Anniversary celebration! Year of practice and patience and face, it, loving kindness, makes for a strong partnership! Congrats to you both.

  5. I love that you and others are doing gratitude daily. My mom is having a hard time parting with the old van because my dad bought it for her. It's still in the driveway. Sometimes you just keep up with the cars if they're still kicking.

Have a wonderful day! (((BIG HUGS)))

    1. But like everything else in life, cars need to be cared for if they are to keep on kicking. (( Big Hugs ))

  6. I just had to invest another small fortune in Hoopty (my baby Buick, not to be confused with my mom's big ol' land yacht of a 2004 LeSabre) - she's getting to "that age" - 8 yrs, about 114K miles, where repair bills have me questioning when the time will be ripe for an upgrade?
But after this repair bill, I'll need to drive her for another few months at least... Now, my 2011 F350 diesel has 210K miles & I plan on towing the horse trailer with her for at least another 4-5 yrs - surely I can get an even 20 yrs out of her??

    1. You clearly get your use out of your vehicles! Towing the horse trailer has to put a strain on that F350 diesel!
