Rest in flight, litte birdie

"Nestled
In your wings my little one
This special
Morning brings another sun
Tomorrow
See the things
That never come
Today.
When you see me
Fly away without you
Shadow on the things you know
Feathers fall around you
And show you the way to go
It's over, it's over."
---'Birds' by Neil Young

Some of you may remember my posting about the Christmas eve gather that my son's GF's dad left the gathering to go check on his little avian friend. Last summer, Skittles (the parrolet) lost Chumley, a female cockatiel and his best friend. Since about Thanksgiving, Skittles himself had been ailing. Last night, he passed on.

During his last weeks, the little bird was vetted by an avian expert, and comforted and nursed by his human household. His last day he was given the companionship of his humans and the birds that live with son & his GF, too, a couple of cockatiels names Scout and Kiwi. I'm touched by how much a part of their family the birds are. They have personalities and quirks and habits, just as the more common house pets like dogs and cats do.

Of course no bird would be safe in my house, where I harbor the genetic variants of lions and tigers, both of whom are stone cold killers and would only see winged creatures as "prey". But I recognize the bond that their human family had with them, and honor that they are all grieving the loss of the tiny bird with the giant personality.

If there's a rainbow bridge for the doggos, I hope there is also a rainbow over which these spirits fly, never tired.

  1. Awwwww, so sorry to hear of the loss of Skittles. They do indeed have personalities. That's wonderful that Skittles had so much companionship during the transition. ((HUGS)) I am sure there is a rainbow bridge for all creatures, great and small!

  2. Aww, a pet is a pet! My mom raised parakeets so I know they have great hearts and personalities.
Many times they were uncaged and trained. They also could steal a half piece of cinnamon toast right off your plate and fly off with it at a low altitude!
One of our birds sat in my 6 year old lap in a mini cage for the flight from Pittsburgh to NJ and our new home (one of the perks of having a dad work for the FAA)

    1. You are so right... a pet is a pet... and they teach us so much! Sounds as though your birds were also family members, as was little Skittles.

  3. Parakeet person here as a child to early adult and each of the six that crossed my path were distinctly their own bird. Skittles had good people.

  4. So sorry to hear about the loss. Birds are fascinating creatures. Such as: geese mate for life. The cardinal couples are adorable. The male will find a choice seed and feed it to his female companion. The birds are about the only critters our dump dog will not chase, but he does bark loudly and run around the yard when a hawk flies overhead. Maybe he's protecting the birds and critters we can't see. Who knows??

    1. Could be... animals have relationships amongst themselves, too.

    1. Skittles was well loved. He was with their family for only seven years, but he "ruled the roost".

  6. I’ve had an African Grey parrot for 40 years....while I definitely prefer fur over feathers...he is an entertaining little guy and makes us smile....I’m pretty sure there’s a spot in heaven for ALL of our pets!❤️ Eissa7

    1. African Greys are a strong personality bird! I met one once while his owner was trying to match him to a new owner. They tend to be picky about their humans!

I was a visitor and had to be introduced and "accepted" by the bird!

  8. Birds have so much personality. That is so sad and heartbreaking about Skittles.
