Dogs sweat through their tongues...

Carl at the dog bar Tuesday evening.  It was still over 100℉, maybe down to 101 from our high of 103 when we got there.  Carl proceeded to decorate all over the outside part of the bar before they closed the garage door to try to keep it at least a little cool with the fans in the big barn-like area.

We settled in at a tall table with drinks, most of the dogs were somewhat lethargic.  They feel the heat, too.  You can see from the floor where Carl's sweat has dropped from his tongue onto the floor.

But it was WAY too hot to be out in the sun at the dog parks, so... alternative.  From time to time the pups would venture out from their people and play for a brief time, but then they would retreat back under their various tables, as Carl has done, here.

Wednesday's sister walk has already been canceled due to the excessive heat, and the people whose jobs are outside?  Are out early today.  A tree service is taking down a tree across the street to the South, and they showed up at 7 a.m. to set up and get done before the heat sets in.

This huge crane held on to the tree that's started to be downed to the ground in the above photo.  Turns out that particular "trunk" is only a small section of the whole.

I was blocked into my home by the various trucks and auxiliary equipment while they worked.  They finished off that one tree, then took out another one, across the street to the West.

We tied the local high temperature record on Tuesday.

I finished season 3 of The Mandalorian Wednesday afternoon.  What's next, I ask?

After the tree guys left, I went and got groceries.  It's still hot.  You don't have to do anything to sweat, just step out the door!

When I pulled back in the driveway, I noticed the sunflowers are blooming in the back yard.  They are tall enough to see over the 6 foot privacy fence!

See?  They tower over little 5' 3" me!

Sunflowers are so cheerful in the sunshine, and they kind of "go with" the hot weather, don't they?

Life is good.

Spark on!

  1. Love the selfie. Yep, it ain't fit for man nor beast out there. We're dealing with a cool snap and cloudiness. Bah humbug, I feel like my summer in the pool has been ruined. I don't mind cooler water but without sun? Nah!

We've had hundreds of trees taken down in our area the past few years. I need to replant something after my own removals. I think these were result of the original developments; loads of fast growing but weak-branched sweetgums with their spikey balls and pine trees that have either been decimated by beetles or rain/windstorms and fallen over bringing half the yards up with their shallow roots. Finally it was so sad to see over 80 ash trees that lined our streets chopped down and carted away to be burned due to the emerald ash borer beetle. Now most of our shade trees are oaks and maples. Messy trees!

    1. We have had the invasion of the Emerald ash borer beetles here, too. Many beautiful trees taken down, some saved through treatments. The helicopter maples (messy seeds)? We've got those aplenty, and of course the mulberries that re-seed themselves and grow WAY too fast. Talk about messy trees.

Suddenly it's almost Labor Day! How did that happen!?

  2. The heat is incredible, bu the humidity is beyond description. My windows have been wet all week. We thought maybe we'd need the furnace yesterday as the heat index, real feel, was only 112, down from 126 on Tuesday. 😆 Welcome relief is coming this weekend.

The heat doesn't matter to some, I guess. The farmer down the road and his crew, put in new fence posts and strung new fence all day yesterday. Taking down those trees must have been interesting to watch.

Carl and his canine friends can attest to the "dog days of summer", although it's later than the info from Farmers' Almanac.

Pretty sunflowers. Do you dry the heads and save the seeds for the birds this winter?

    Stay cool! Stay safe!

    1. Yes, it's a fascinating process, that tree removal. Watching those guys have at it in the heat I can see your farmer neighbors setting in fence.

Busy week or two coming up for me, and it will be Fall for real soon.

Stay cool and safe yourself, too.

  3. Yes, Carl looks warm! Miss Lilly was yesterday, too. Got to 101.

Wow! Those are TALL sunflowers. They’d tower over me, too, that’s for sure!

Stay cool. Thank goodness for a/c and fans.

    1. LOL... They seem to spring up full grown into flower and surprise me every year. A year ago I didn't have them, as I'd just had the yard cleared, but they clearly re-seeded themselves. And they are so cheery!

  4. It's been hot here too and we broke a record. Our lawn service was here at 7 a.m. while it was cool outside. The good thing is we're getting cooler weather starting tomorrow. I hope you get the cooler weather too.

    Enjoy the weekend! (((BIG HUGS)))

    1. We broke the record one or two days this past week, but today (Friday) it's "cooler" by comparison, and the weekend is supposed to be, too.

  5. Good idea to take the pups to the dog bar. Benji is missing his afternoon walks. Gotta stay safe! ~Ace

  6. We have been having pretty good temperatures. My sister loved every minute here as we had the windows open and the fans drawing in cool air at night. She hasn't been able to do that in Florida all summer.

    1. Oh, dear, yes... Florida, my brother used to note, was to his way of thinking "a state made habitable only by the invention of air conditioning".
