Day 3: Today I am grateful

Today I am grateful for a warm house when the temperatures finally decided to drop.  I am thankful that it's only gone down to 31 degrees on its way to 30, as opposed to the 26 the weatherman said.  I did not drain the main line of the underground water sprinklers, but I did turn it off for the 4 a.m. schedule for this morning.

Val said she could tell better whether Ember was "overweight" from a photo from directly above.  Here she was eating her breakfast Tuesday morning.  I'm thinking I might take some progress photos over time to see how the waist starts to reappear.  Who knew I'd be having to manage a dog's diet?

Life is good.  Spark on!

  1. Yup, we do :D Yes, a warm house when the temperatures begin to drop is a wonderful blessing. Have a great day!

    1. LOL! If I'm watching hers, I can also be watching mine! Just having Ember has been motivation to take better care of my own nutrition, but I can no longer rely on "she's a big breed" for limitless treats!

  2. On this frosty morning, I am grateful for the ability to prepare good tasting, nourishing meals. Stay warm and toasty.

    1. Amen to that. There's nothing better than warming up the house by warming up the kitchen and making it smell like autumn!

  3. PHOENIX1949

After 3 days in the triple digits, a cold front blew in last night in Central Texas. Woke up to 58F with an expected high of 76F. If it weren't for the heavy ragweed pollen, I would open the windows and air out the house.

The Farmer's Dog folks request a weight and form check every 2-3 weeks to monitor things. KC was losing slowly and steadily and photos from above and the side were very encouraging. Then he started gaining again -- cannot get spouse to stop the treats outside of ones that come with the program, SIGH!

Tomorrow is my scope exam to make sure no new tumor(s) have snuck into my bladder. None will mean no treatments until January and time to get cataracts done before year end. Measurements and calculations are done for this.

Are you still in contact with Debra from Naples, Edison's humom? Thought of them during the raging storms in FL. Hope they are okay!

    Have a great day!

    1. I have an e-mail address for DebraT, and just sent her a query. I hadn't heard Naples mentioned in the news, so wasn't as concerned about her this particular go-around, but I also haven't been in recent contact with her. Last e-mail I have from her was in 2022 after THAT hurricane.

    2. P.S. She answered back, and she and household are fine. She asked for my blog site, so hopefully she'll chime in from time to time and let you know directly how she, her DH, and Edison are doing!

  4. That was my first chore yesterday . . . getting the outside water turned off. DONE!

OH my. Well, good luck w/Ember’s nutrition. Even they have to live a Sparky lifestyle!

IT’s been cold the last few days. Had graupel/rain/snow mix early in the morning. But then the sun came out. Not much warming, so grateful for the furnace, too!

    1. We had frost overnight here. It will bounce back, no freeze overnight Wednesday is predicted.

Spark dogs, all of them! If we want them to have a happy life, a dog has to have a fit life, too!

  5. That's a great attitude! It's nice to appreciate the little things, especially when it's cold outside. And it's a good idea to be cautious with your underground sprinklers to avoid any potential freezing issues.

As for Ember, get a professional opinion from your vet to determine if she's at a healthy weight. They can provide you with specific guidelines and recommendations. And taking progress photos can be a helpful way to track her weight loss journey.

Have a great day! (((BIG HUGS)))

    1. Good point about the vet... I did ask at her last vet visit, and the vet tech said she did look "a little thick". Thus the attempt to be careful about overfeeding of treat type things. Even "big" breeds can get in trouble with that.

The referenced Val is a veterinarian herself. She commented on an earlier blog that she could tell better with this kind of angle of a photograph. Progress photos can be a fun part of a fitness journey, not just about weight, but about general fitness, too.

  6. I think you'll find your professionals agree that Ember is well-rewarded, thus well-fed! Perhaps she's got that adolescent chubbiness that will disappear with a few less treats.

  7. Late to the party!!! But yes indeedy, Ms Ember is mildly overweight. This should all balance out as she grows since she’s obviously gonna be one of those thick field-trial type Labs…
I commonly tell clients to not only feed based upon ideal weight, but in many cases, you must reduce 15-25% below those margins to account for ultra-efficient metabolisms.

    1. Thanks, Val! You have been most generous in sharing your expertise. I have to admit most of the time in feeding Ember, I'm guessing at her weight as I read the package "recommendations", and guessing at how much she's getting in training treats. We shall see how things improve with fewer treats and "better for her" treats. I have now cut out the whipped cream entirely (I had been bribing her to get into the crate) and reduced the amount of peanut butter "schmear" she gets on her bone (also a crate bribe), and reduced the number / size of random treats. Still feeding her real food and kibble, and I've upped her exercise a shade, too.
